Feed safety
Swine production has largely adopted on-farm biosecurity to control disease transmission and preserve swine health. Feed and feed ingredients have not originally been thought to be substantial vectors of disease until recently. Incidents have demonstrated the ability of feed and feed ingredients to harbor and transmit disease, such as Salmonella and Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDv). Moreover, recent studies have demonstrated that a number of viruses, including African Swine Fever Virus (ASFv), can survive transboundary shipment in feed and feed ingredients, and represent a hazard to introduction of foreign animal diseases in the country.
Implementing biosecurity measures in feed mills is key to minimize the chance of disease transmission via feed and improve health, economic security, and food safety. More information about transmission of diseases through feed and feed ingredients, feed mill biosecurity, and prevention and mitigation strategies is available at Feed Safety Resources.
