Porcine intestinal mucosa products
Porcine intestinal mucosa products are by-products obtained from processing of swine intestinal mucosa to extract heparin in the pharmaceutical industry. Porcine intestinal mucosa products provide small peptides that are easily digestible by pigs. The crude protein content is high (50-60%) and the amino acid profile is good (Myers et al., 2014). Commercially available products are generally referred as spray-dried porcine solubles, enzymatically-processed proteins, or peptones. Variation in composition of porcine intestinal mucosa products is due to different vegetable proteins used during processing of intestinal mucosa and carriers used in the final product (Jones et al., 2010; Myers et al., 2014). Similar to blood products, it is advisable to only use porcine products that are tested and PCR-negative for Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv) in order to minimize the risk of disease transmission via feed ingredients.
